C’Demk ~ As it brightens

I am a painter exploring the bridge between the psyche and the spiritual world, the dialogue between what’s buried within us and what’s divine. My work is rooted in faith, history, and the language of symbols. I paint to uncover what our ancestors once knew, truths that still live in our unconscious, waiting to be remembered.

For me, painting is a kind of surrender. I create what God allows me to see, translating that connection into color and form, a visual expression of the unseen. Rooted in faith, historical inquiry, and Jungian psychology, my practice investigates the unconscious and its symbols as a way of revisiting lost knowledge — truths that once connected humanity to the divine and to itself.

This is the unseen dialogue. The conversation between worlds that never stopped, we simply forgot how to listen.

My name as an artist is C’Demk, drawn from my own name, Coky Demeke, and rooted in my Ethiopian heritage. In Amharic, its pronunciation carries the meaning as it brightens. That is my intention with every painting, not to impose light, but to reveal it. To brush away what covers the ancient and the sacred, and let what was always there begin to shine through.

A woman sitting on a pinkish sofa with a light-colored, textured wall in the background. The woman is wearing a silky, pale pink dress and is posed with her left arm resting on her knees, gazing to her right. The wall behind her has two framed bird illustrations, one with a black frame and the other with a gold frame. To the left, there is a white lamp with a shade and a window with patterned curtains. The floor has a rug with a striped design.
